In response to reading the NCR's article, I wrote this to the Reiki Master who first informed me: "I have scanned the article this morning before heading off to the office....getting my web site up and running is a priority for the next days....and this is my opinion.
I agree with the bishops that having Reiki introduced into Catholic retreat centers as the nuns have compromises the relationship between the church and its teachings.....and the parishoners. This needs to be the official line as Reiki often, as we know, does raise questions about the church doctrine and reintroduces discussions that perhaps would be interesting for us but not for them. Having initiated a couple of nuns in the early days as masters, I would not do so now out of respect for their spiritual practice. I do not support the introduction of another spiritual practice even one that I have myself to someone else without being clear that when I initiate this person as a master, it is taking away attention and dedication to the first. I have seen this happen with masters I have initiated.....and though I can hold this as a "cosmic" thing...that they have found their true path, I experience the loss of their attention and focus on this practice and how it affects the Reiki communities that they have lived in. The church is not dismissing Reiki as neutral or something that is not effective. Obviously there is something that is drawing many of their most dedicated "students" to Reiki. They have acknowledged that it is not just a technique but something more.....and whether they believe it or not......it does not matter. They acknowledge it. I can appreciate where they are coming from and trust that in the workings of honoring each other's choices, they will come to a peaceful settlement of this issue. For us, I feel that Reiki has raised a question that will take time to work out. Taking it "personally" for Reiki does not see the greater picture. As masters I feel that we must have respect for other practices, including those that we are not involved in.....and that we also understand that Reiki will make a difference. I know three nuns who have left their order after becoming involved in Reiki....as second degree students. Why wouldn't this concern the church? Thanks for the heads up" |
